[Interview] Do-A On ‘Bad For You’, ALICE, And RAINBOW18

Hello and welcome back to HallyuTones – always focused on sound, stage and substance.

It is always a pleasure to speak to any artist, but I especially love talking to idols who are experienced in the industry – whether they are still active as part of a group or if their group is now inactive.

Today I have the pleasure of bringing to you our recent interview with Do-A (previously known as Bella), ex-member of K-Pop girl group ALICE, singer-songwriter, rapper, creative producer and model. We spoke about her new releases, her concepts, her work with RAINBOW18, and some fun TMIs for her fans!

All credits for translation go to Christine Kim, who helped facilitate the smooth process – we could not have done this without you.

Introduction:

Do-A’s career as an idol began in 2017. On June 1st, 2017 she debuted as a member of K-Pop girl group ALICE (who at the time were called ELRIS), with the release of their first mini album ‘We, First’. The title track of the same name introduced the group’s sound, which is often described as cute and refreshing.

Do-A then competed on the show MIXNINE alongside her group member Hyeseong. Her final ranking was 18th place.

ELRIS later moved agencies from Hunus Entertainment to IOK Company on December 1st, 2021. This led to an eventual rename of the group on April 11, 2022, with a rebrand as ALICE. With this rebrand came a change to Bella‘s stage name to Do-A.

On May 3rd 2024, Do-A along with several of her members left IOK Company after her contract expiration.

However, since her departure, she has been trying some new and interesting things. I am beyond excited to be able to share with you the recent projects that Do-A has taken part in as a soloist, and an update as to what she has been up to!

Interview:

Q1. Please introduce yourself and your music!

Hello! It’s been a while! This is ALICE Do-A!

Q2. Please tell us more about your new song ‘Bad For You (BFU)’.

The new song “Bad For You” is a project song created in collaboration with the clothing brand MADPINK. It’s an R&B/soul genre song! It’s a medium-tempo song with a lot of atmosphere, so it was a new challenge for me.

Q3. What do you feel has changed the most as an artist since your debut? What new concepts would you like to try in the future?

This was my first solo album, so I felt a great sense of responsibility. I also paid extra attention to monitoring. If I were to try a new concept in the future, I’d definitely like to try a more gentle genre like acoustic or indie.

Q4. Which memory or stage is the most precious to you?

Actually, I think every stage was precious. I didn’t realize it then, but as time passed, I realized how precious it was. My debut stage is the most memorable. I think that was when I felt the happiest and most overwhelmed.

Q5. Do you have a favorite song or comeback from ALICE’s promotions?

Personally, my favorite song is “Fairytale” from the last album, Milky Way. I think the innocent and cheerful vibe of the song best suits ALICE! We recorded it quickly, so it was the easiest and most enjoyable to sing.

Q6. What do music and performance mean to you?

I think it’s energy and driving force. My fans get energy from my music and performance, and that motivates me to work harder and show a better side of myself.

Q7. Who was the first artist who influenced or inspired you to debut as a K-pop artist?

This is senior BoA. I was so shocked by the sight of a young solo singer filling the stage that I thought, “I want to be like her.” When I was a trainee, I used to imitate her vocal style and feel a lot.

Q8. What are your future goals as a solo artist?

As an artist, if given the opportunity, I’ll take on any challenge without hesitation. I definitely want to collaborate with other artists on music.

Q9. How are you spending your time these days? Do you have any interests or hobbies?

I spend a lot of time with friends and started exercising for my health. I love animation so much that I watch a lot of it and find peace.

Q10. What is your own TMI or fun fact that your fans might not know yet?

I love anime so much that I’ve naturally developed an interest in Japanese language and culture, and I’m studying it now. And surprisingly, I sleep a lot and don’t move around much, so recently I walked seven steps all day.

Q11. You were recently named creative director for RAINBOW18’s first mini-album. How did this project come to fruition, and do you plan to continue your career as a creative director in the future?

The CEO of a close friend’s company gave me a great opportunity to participate. I participated in directing the recording, hair and makeup, and styling, and it was a truly enjoyable experience. I hope to work with more artists in the future!

Q12. Lastly, is there any message you’d like to share with your fans and new viewers?

It’s been a while since I’ve been active, and I’ve had fewer opportunities to communicate directly with fans, which has been upsetting, but I’ll work hard to show you a better side of me through more active and diverse activities in the future. Thank you for your unwavering support and love.

Thank you so much to Do-A for her time and for sharing her recent work with us. We wish her the best for all of her activities and hope to work together with her again in the future!
