Hello and welcome to my first article for HallyuTones! — always dedicated to the music, production and performance at the heart of K-pop.
Albums have become a staple in K-pop fan culture, specifically its paraphernalia: the photocards, photo books, stickers etc. This format has its own dedicated community of fans who focus predominantly on collecting their favourite idols albums and its inclusions; thereby keeping K-pop albums relevant in a time where physical media faces obsolescence due to the rise of digital streaming.
Consequently, packaging has become more crucial than ever for K-pop albums; the value no longer being in the music it holds but in the aesthetics. In response, entertainment companies have had to start thinking outside the box, (quite literally). Adventuring with shape, technology and practicality — which has led to some truly bizarre designs at times. While this evolution is fun to judge, it proves the importance of presentation.
So, today I will discuss 5 innovative but visually pleasing K-pop albums!
5. F(x)- Pink Tape
This album is a must mention as it was one of the firsts to really get experimental, from the music itself to the album packaging; it’s quirkiness leaving a lasting impact on the K-pop industry. The ‘Pink Tape’ album lives up to its name; taking the form of a VHS tape in a pink slipcase with a decorative information sheet at the back and the inside photobook reminiscent of screenshots. To burst your bubble, it unfortunately isn’t functional as a tape however this was just a preview of how albums would develop in the years to come.
4. MARK- The Firstfruit [Fruit Juice ver.]
The juice box’s comeback. This design’s theme, playful imagery and it’s slogan “the fruit that grew up listening to music tastes even better” is all reminiscent of packaging aimed for kids. This juice box gives fans a piece of their childhood — matching the album’s theme of nostalgia; the songs following different eras of his life. Although, to listen to these songs, you’ll need to free up some file space since this juice box has a QR code instead of a CD; This is K-pop’s recent “smart album” concept. Many praise the initiative for being environmentally friendly whereas others think it defeats the purpose of an album. What do you think?
3. IRENE & SEULGI- TILT [Special ver.]
This purse/album hybrid stands out with its black base being mostly covered with objects to give the purse a see through appearance, these objects: luxury jewellery, heels and gold gives the purse an expensive feel. The back of the purse features a lighter and a rose creating a rebellious image. These details align with the duo’s dark and powerful concept. As an accessory, this functional purse targets fashion-forward fans, the removable belt allowing room for personalisation. This badass purse would compliment many outfits.
2. NMIXX- Fe3O4: Forward [Shell ver.]
This shell-shaped mp3 player has made waves. The design is reflective of NMIXX’s sea inspired concept that has been a part of their artistic identity since debut. There are 6 different colours each representing a member, this approach allows fans to choose their bias’ version or get the whole set. This shell not only serves as a sought after collectible but as a practical device, pre loaded with all the tracks from the album. Beyond serving as an mp3 player, the shell casing includes a keychain attachment, making it an accessory that fans can carry with them daily. This multi functionality merges fashion, technology and music into a cohesive fan experience.
1. IU- A Flower Bookmark, Pt.3 [CDP ver.]
While K-pop albums have become more decorative pieces, at their heart lies the CD. However, the disc rarely sees use; a lot of K-pop’s audience being born into the digital streaming era, never having owned a cd player in the first place. This portable CD player album revisits and introduces the 2000s listening experience to the new generation, whilst incorporating modern K-pop collectibles — reflecting the album’s concept of reimagining older Korean songs. The album’s design is coherent with its title; the floral motifs and pink colour scheme making it pretty to display when not in use. I think we can all appreciate the productivity of a CD coming with its own CD player.
Across these 5 albums, we can see the diversity and innovation in K-pop album design. Old media exist and thrive alongside newer digital strategies. Album packaging is constantly improving, these 5 albums are just a teaser compared to the vast K-pop market.
