Hello and welcome back to HallyuTones — always focused on sound, stage and substance.
Often people think the Korean pop impact in the global market started with the era of BTS and BLACKPINK’s rise to ultrastardom. Songs like ‘Gangnam Style’ by Mas Musiq and Daliwonga et al show that there isn’t a corner of the world that was untouched by the hype of PSY’s iconic 2012 pop hit, and before that, the Wonder Girls were charting on the Billboard Hot 100 and touring with the Jonas Brothers in 2009.
Something I think about often, both as a consumer and as a writer, is just how much of the Korean music scene I’m missing out on just because of where I am, geographically speaking. I’ve mentioned it in a few pieces before but South African production companies are still catching up to the demand for Korean entertainers to perform in the country that has been growing exponentially for over ten (yes, 10) years.
As fans of K-pop internationally, we often see events like fanmeetings, concerts, and even music shows as events that make up K-pop idol life and fandom. However, for those who know where to look in different corners of the internet, and the lively South Korean streets, there is a whole new world to explore.
The first time I read the name Ban Seolhee, I was reading the introduction to a project group called Girls2ooo. The next time, she had released a solo album and even competed in a survival show called Girls Frontier. Since then, Ban Seolhee has not slowed down her constant evolution for a second. Her current journey finds her taking space as member Rahel in the jihadol group F-Keys.
Not sure what a jihadol is? I wasn’t either before this interview. What I’ve learnt since, is that in a time and place where artists and performers are becoming increasingly priced out of participating in mainstream spaces, they are creating their own paths and inviting fans near and wide to join their journeys.
Introducing an artist with too much artistic passion to contain, Ban Seolhee.
Interview
1. Hello, and welcome to HallyuTones. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
→ Hello, HallyuTones! I’m Ban Seolhee, a singer and producer from Korea!
2. You’ve made several debuts under various stage names and have numerous songwriting and composing credits to your name. Could you share a few of your other names that our readers might recognize?
→ Names you come up with yourself tend to reveal a bit of your ego, don’t they? I’m usually too embarrassed to talk about them, but the past always seems to come out eventually!
I’ll tell you: Dali (달리), and Jajubi (자주비).
I remember using names like these. I liked the feminine feel of the letter “d,” and I think I also liked the color purple and rain. Nowadays, I prefer lilac over purple, and I’m not really into rain anymore, though…
Oh! Another common trait is that they end with syllables like “y” or “i.” I think they have a pretty sound.
3. If you had to describe your career so far in three words, what would they be, and why?
→ “Little Princess Project” 「소공녀 프로젝트」, “Special Girls Frontier” 「특전소녀전선」, “F-Keys” 「에프키스」. These are the three projects that have completely transformed my life!
4. What moment or work do you consider to be the turning point that marked the true beginning of your life as a musician or performer?
→ I think my start as a performer was when I performed “Fortissimo (ff)” on “F-Keys”’s debut stage. I don’t think you’re a performer just because you’re on stage; I believe the self-awareness and mindset that come with being a performer are what truly matter…
On that stage, I feel I achieved and came face-to-face with “the version of myself I’ve always wanted to surpass.” In terms of mindset rather than technique, I consider that to have been my new peak as a performer at the time.
These days, I feel like I’m surpassing that point once again. It’s another new peak. In fact, I’m really enjoying performing right now, it’s the first time I’ve ever felt this way. I think these challenges and this growth are truly enjoyable for me.
5. Do you consider yourself a musician who sticks to a specific genre, or would you say you’re more adventurous when it comes to sound?
→ I have an adventurous streak. But if you look at my discography, some people might find that hard to believe—most of my songs have a similar style.
I’m the type of person who lives by the motto, “Let’s focus on what I’m good at.” Because of that, I find myself exploring ways to make what I’m familiar with even more fun and impressive.
That said, if someone extends a teaching hand to me, I’m happy to go along with it. In that sense, I think I’m adventurous. Or maybe I’m just open-minded…
The track 「널 TKFKDGO」 is a great example. It was a collaboration with a composer who loves hip-hop, and I think it was a project that allowed me to show a new side of myself.
I wonder if things like that will happen again in the future?
6. Part of your journey has led you to debuting in, and producing music for, the Girls2ooo Project. What are some memories from that time that you hold dear?
→ Every moment we shared is a precious memory. In fact, seeing the members from the Girls2ooo Project—who are still active today—brings me great joy.
I can really feel how passionate those friends were about music and performing, which makes the time we spent together feel even more special.
I hope they continue to have an amazing journey ahead.
7. For those who haven’t experienced Korea’s vibrant music scene firsthand or haven’t been exposed to your work, could you explain what a “jihadol” is?
→ “Jihadol (지하돌)” is short for “underground idol,” a term I understand to refer to idols who primarily perform at underground venues. Since their activities center around live performances, they’re also called “live idols,” and among them, groups that operate independently are sometimes classified as “indie idols.” The key point is that they’re idols who perform live frequently. I’m currently active as a “jihadol” with a group called F-Keys.
8. How does this path differ from the mainstream idol industry that fans are familiar with?
→ I’d say the biggest difference is that our activities are centered around live performances—just like a rock band.
Just as you would go see a band perform, you can come see our live shows after work. After the show, we take Polaroid photos together to capture the memories, sign autographs, and have fun chatting…
I think there’s a certain charm to being able to see us up close and often, which makes fans want to support us even more.
9. Among the songs you’ve released under the name “Ban Seol-hee,” which one do you think best represents you?
→ Of the songs released so far, I think the lyrics of ‘love me 100‘ capture who I am best.
One day, I was really surprised when I read the lyrics. I’m not usually one to overthink things, but I had some things on my mind, so I found myself thinking deeply about myself for the first time. The conclusion I reached was already fully expressed in those lyrics.
I once read somewhere that “an artist simply tells the same story over and over again in different forms,” and it made me wonder, “Is that really true?”
10. Many of the visual elements in your work feature floral motifs, gaming elements, and frequent references to angels (1004). What do these elements mean to you?
→ Wow, I get asked questions like this often, but this is the first time someone has mentioned all of these elements at once. Looking back now, I realize they’re all things I love.
First of all, I really love flowers. I love their beauty and their lovely scent.
And gaming is my only hobby. (I really love Roblox…)
As for the angel (1004), there’s a playful connection in Korean because the number “1004” 천사 and the word “angel” 천사 are pronounced the same way. I just think that’s fun! I love both angels and math. I love numbers, too.
Ultimately, since I’m an artist who wants to sing about “love,” isn’t that why I ended up using the things I love so much as metaphors?
11. As you navigate the music industry as an independent artist, is there a lesson you learned while studying music in school that still resonates deeply with you today?
→ The lesson that’s really stuck with me is that, no matter what, you just have to “do it.” Music is a dream and a romantic ideal for many people, but I think it’s a no-nonsense field where execution is more important than in any other. But that’s why I like it even more. It feels more real, doesn’t it?
Working in this industry, I feel there are many times when you just have to dive right in without feeling shy or having any doubts.
But once you get hooked on that feeling of bravely throwing yourself into it, I don’t think you can ever break free! Even so, there are still times when it’s tough.
12. Not only did you debut as a solo artist and a group member, but you also participated in the show “Girls Frontier.” What do you think viewers often underestimate about these kinds of artist competition shows?
→ Participating in a competition show is a life-changing experience. It feels like making a choice that means you can never go back to a time when you didn’t know that sensation. It feels like a turning point, I guess? And you get to meet so many people… You really can’t know what kind of butterfly effect being exposed to that kind of environment might have. In that sense, I definitely think it’s a life-changing experience.
But those weighty elements are inevitably off-camera. Of course, I think that’s how it should be. Anyway, while talent shows take the form of variety programs designed to entertain and move viewers, I’d say that inside them, it’s as if 100 human documentaries are being filmed simultaneously.
13. How did you feel when you were selected as the Best Individual Participant in the competition? (Congratulations again!)
→ Thank you! I was really lucky… Every participant in that competition had their own unique charm, and they all gave it their all, even putting their daily lives on hold. Because I know what that award means, whenever I feel like giving up, I tell myself to keep going and push through. In that sense, it’s also a cherished memory—like a trophy that keeps me going… I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all once again. I believe it was a gift given to me by everyone who supports me, all coming together as one.

14. As you continue your activities as F-Keys Rahel, what kind of performances and updates can fans expect from the group?
→ I believe artists shine even brighter when they collaborate with one another, allowing their individual charms and personalities to really stand out. In that sense, through our group activities, I think we’ll be able to show you a side where both my charm and the members’ charms sparkle even more.
As a producer, I think I’ll be able to present a wide spectrum of music. You might find yourselves thinking things like, “Oh, Ban Seolhee does this kind of music too!” or “This is what it feels like when Ban Seolhee’s style is added to an idol group.”
Above all, you’ll get to see me dance! It’s awesome, right?

Often when I struggle to find something to listen to, I return to the most sincere artists in my mind and from the first listen, her passion and understanding of the language of music shone through.
Much like the butterfly effect of the survival shows, the internet is the same. A simple scroll could land you knee deep in a rabbit hole you never would have otherwise thought to look in. In this case, I’m glad my curiosity on the internet has led me to F-Keys’ Rahel, and the tight-knit world of jihadols. → 직접 지은 이름에는 사람의 에고가 드러나잖아요. 부끄러워서 잘 밝히지 않는 편이지만, 과거는 언젠가 드러나더라고요!
알려드릴게요 : 달리, 자주비
이런 이름들을 사용했던 기억이 나요. 알파벳 「d」가 주는 여성스러운 느낌이 좋았고, 자주색과 비도 좋아했던 것 같아요. 지금은 자주색보다 라일락색이 더 좋고, 비도 그닥 안 좋아하지만요…
아! 끝 음절이 y, i 같은 것으로 끝난다는 특징도 있네요. 예쁜 발음이라고 생각해요.
3. 지금까지의 경력을 세 단어로 표현한다면 무엇이며, 그 이유는 무엇인가요?
→ 「소공녀 프로젝트」, 「특전소녀전선」, 「에프키스」
저의 삶을 뒤흔들어놓은 세 가지 프로젝트입니다!
4. 음악가나 퍼포머로서의 삶이 본격적으로 시작된 계기라고 생각되는 순간이나 작품은 무엇인가요?
→ 퍼포머로서의 시작은, 「에프키스」의 데뷔 무대에서 「포르티시모 (ff)」를 퍼폼했을 때라고 생각해요.
퍼폼을 한다고 해서 퍼포머라고는 생각하지 않고, 자신이 퍼포머라는 자각과 마음가짐이 중요하다고 생각하는데요…
저는 그 무대에서 「언젠가 뛰어넘고 싶은 자신」을 이뤄냈고, 마주했다고 생각해요. 테크닉보다는 마음가짐의 의미로, 당시 (퍼포머로서의) 제 새로운 고점이었다고 생각하거든요.
요즘에는 다시 한 번 그 지점을 뛰어넘고 있다고 생각해요. 또 새로운 고점인 거죠. 오히려 아주 즐겁게 무대를 하고 있는데, 그런 식으로는 또 처음 해보거든요. 이러한 도전과 발전이 저에게는 정말 즐거운 일인 것 같아요.
5. 자신을 특정 장르에 머무르는 음악가라고 생각하시나요, 아니면 사운드에 있어 모험적인 편이라고 생각하시나요?
→ 저는 모험적인 성향이예요. 하지만 디스코그래피를 보면, 믿기 어려운 분들도 있을 것 같아요. 대부분 곡 스타일이 비슷하거든요.
저는, 「내가 잘하는 것에 집중하자」라는 생각으로 사는 타입이예요. 그러다보니, 익숙한 것을 더욱 더 재밌고 멋지게 할 수 있는 방법을 연구하게 되는 것 같아요.
그렇지만 누군가가 손을 내밀어준다면 즐겁게 따라가기도 하거든요. 그런 의미에서, 저는 모험적인 성향이라고 생각해요. 열려있다고 해야 되나…
「널 TKFKDGO」라는 트랙은 아주 좋은 예시예요. 힙합을 좋아하는 작곡가분과의 콜라보레이션이었는데, 새로운 저를 보여드릴 수 있는 작업이었다고 생각하거든요.
앞으로도 그런 일들이 일어나지 않을까요?
6. 지금까지의 여정 중 Girls2ooo Project로 데뷔하고 음악을 프로듀싱한 경험이 있습니다. 그 시절에 대해 소중히 간직하고 있는 추억이 있다면 무엇인가요?
→ 함께했던 모든 순간이 소중한 추억이네요.
오히려, 지금까지도 활동하고 있는 소공녀 프로젝트 (Girls2ooo Project) 출신 멤버들을 보는 것이 저의 행복인 것 같아요.
그만큼 음악과 무대에 열정이 있는 친구들과 함께했던 게 느껴져서, 함께했던 시간들이 더욱 빛나는 기분이예요.
앞으로도 친구들이 멋진 여정을 해나갔으면 좋겠어요.
7. 한국의 활발한 음악 현장을 직접 경험하지 못한 분이나 당신의 작품을 접하지 못한
분들을 위해, ‘지하돌(jihadol)’이 무엇인지 설명해 주시겠어요?
→ 지하돌(jihadol)은 지하 아이돌의 줄임말으로, 주로 지하 공연장에서 공연하는 아이돌이라는 점에서 붙은 명칭으로 알고 있어요. 라이브 공연 중심으로 활동한다고 해서 라이브 아이돌(live idol)이라고도 하고, 그중 인디펜던트의 형태로 활동하는 그룹은 인디즈 아이돌(indie idol)로 분류되기도 하는 것 같아요. 중요한 건, 라이브 공연을 많이 하는 아이돌이라는 거죠. 저는 현재 에프키스(fkeys)라는 그룹으로 지하돌 활동을 하고 있어요.
8. 이 길은 팬들이 잘 알고 있는 일반적인 아이돌 산업과 어떤 점이 다른가요?
→ 가장 큰 차이가 있다면 아무래도 라이브 공연 위주의 활동을 한다는 점이겠죠? 락밴드처럼요.
밴드 공연을 보듯이, 퇴근하면 저희의 라이브를 보러 오실 수 있어요. 공연이 끝나면 함께 폴라로이드 사진을 찍어 추억을 남기고, 싸인도 해드리는데, 이때 즐거운 대화를 나누기도 해요…
가까이서, 자주 볼 수 있으니까 좀 더 응원하게 되는 매력이 있는 것 같아요.
9. ‘반설희’라는 이름으로 발표한 곡 중, 당신을 가장 잘 대변한다고 생각하시는 곡은 무엇인가요?
→ 지금까지 발매된 곡들 중에서는, ‘love me 100’의 가사가 저를 잘 담아냈다고 생각해요.
어느날 가사를 보고 깜짝 놀랐어요. 제가 원래 생각을 잘 안 하는데, 할 일이 좀 있어서, 되게 제 자신에 대해 한 번 골똘히 생각을 했었거든요. 그러다가 내린 결론이 이미 그 가사에 다 담겨있었더라고요.
아티스트는 영원히 똑같은 이야기를 다른 형태로 풀어나가는 것뿐이다, 라는 이야기를 어디선가 본 적이 있는데, 정말 그런 걸까? 라는 생각이 들었습니다.
10. 작품에 등장하는 많은 비주얼 요소에는 꽃 모티프와 게임 요소, 그리고 천사(1004)에
대한 지속적인 언급이 담겨 있습니다. 이 요소들은 당신에게 어떤 의미를 지니나요?
→ 와, 이런 질문은 자주 받지만, 모든 요소들이 언급되는 질문은 처음이예요. 이제 와서 보면, 모두 제가 사랑하는 것들이네요.
일단 저는 꽃을 정말 좋아해요. 그 아름다운 모습과 좋은 향기를 좋아해서요.
그리고 게임은, 저의 유일한 취미예요. (로블록스를 정말 좋아해요…)
천사(1004)는 한국에서 숫자 ‘1004’와 단어 ‘천사’가 같은 발음을 한다는 점에서 언어유희를 할 수 있는 관계성을 지니는데, 그게 그냥 재밌는 것 같아요. 저는 천사도 좋아하고 수학도 좋아하거든요. 숫자도 좋아하고요.
결국, ‘사랑’을 노래하고자 하는 아티스트이기 때문에, 이렇게 좋아하고 사랑하는 것들을 메타포로 사용하게 된 거 아닐까요?
11. 독립 아티스트로서 음악 산업을 헤쳐 나가는 과정에서, 학창 시절 음악 공부를 하며 배운 것 중 지금까지도 마음에 깊이 새겨져 있는 교훈이 있다면 무엇인가요?
→ 뭐든지, 일단 ‘그냥 해야한다’ 라는 것이 저에게 새겨져 있는 교훈이예요. 음악은 많은 사람들의 꿈이고 낭만이지만, 그 어떤 분야보다도 실행력이 가장 중요한 건조한 분야라고 생각합니다. 근데 그래서 더 좋아요. 좀 더 진짜 같잖아요.
여기서 일하다보면 부끄러워 할 것도 없고, 의심할 것도 없이 달려들어야 할 때가 많다고 느껴요.
근데 용감하게 몸을 맡기는 그 기분에 한 번 중독되면, 헤어나올 수 없는 것 같아요! 아직도 어려울 때가 있지만.
12. 솔로 및 그룹 멤버로 데뷔했을 뿐만 아니라, ‘걸스 프론티어’라는 프로그램에도 참여하셨습니다. 시청자들이 이런 아티스트 경연 프로그램에 대해 흔히 과소평가하는 점은 무엇이라고 생각하시나요?
→ 경연 프로그램에 참가한다는 것은 인생이 바뀌는 경험이예요. 다시는 어떤 감각을 모르던 때로 돌아갈 수 없는 선택을 한다는 느낌이랄까요. 뭔가 분기점의 느낌?
그리고, 정말 수많은 사람들을 만나게 되고요…
이런 환경에 노출된다는 것에 어떤 나비효과가 있을지는 정말 알 수 없잖아요.
그런 점에서 확실히 life-changing experience 라고 생각해요.
근데 그런 무거운 요소들은 아무래도 카메라 밖에 있죠. 당연히 그게 맞다고 생각하지만요.
아무튼, 경연 프로그램이라는 것은 시청자분들께 즐거움과 감동을 드리는 예능의 형태를 띄고 있지만
그 안에서는 인간 다큐멘터리가 100편은 동시에 녹화되고 있다고 말하고 싶어요.
13. 경연에서 최우수 개인 참가자로 선정되었을 때 어떤 기분이셨나요? (다시 한 번 축하드립니다)
→ 감사합니다! 정말 운이 좋았죠… 그 경연의 참가자 모두가 다 자신만의 매력이 있었고, 일상을 포기하면서 최선을 다했거든요. 그 자리가 어떤 의미인지 아니까, 포기하고 싶을 때마다 힘내야지 하면서 힘내고 있습니다. 그런 의미에서는 저를 일으키는 트로피 같은 명예로운 기억이기도 하네요… 이 자리를 빌어 다시 한 번 더 감사드립니다. 저를 응원해주시는 모든 분들께서 힘을 합쳐 안겨주신 선물이었다고 생각해요.
